Add ability to switch out model for built-in custom assistants

As of 17 June 2026, Kagi Assistant offers three built-in custom assistants: Code, Study, and News. Their "model" property tells me that they use Claude Sonnet, which is what they used (and were limited to) before the assistant overhaul.

Since I avoid using models by Anthropic, I'm essentially locked out of the built-in assistants, which I find very sad as previous experience trying them out have lead to good results.

I would like Kagi to add a way to change the model within built-in assistants. This could be an app-wide change (such as one in settings called "Default model for built-in assistants") just like the default model for general queries. This change would let users who would like to avoid specific models (such as Sonnet, but this could change any day) still use the built-in assistants.

You can kind of do this already, I have a "Kimi Code" custom assistant, with custom bang name of !kcode, the model set to K2.7 Code, and in "How would you like Kagi Assistant to respond?" just put "/code" which will give it the same system prompt as the built-in Code assistant.

Yep, what jadams9 said above. You can create a custom assistant with the /code command as your custom instructions, and that will allow you to have the same system prompting with whatever model you choose.
