Bring back Tags in Assistant!

Not much more to say than what's already in the title!
I was hoping for the addition of folders (maybe also nested ones, a max nesting of 3 seems reasonable), but the price of losing tags is a steep one.

Could we just have both? It'd make it very nice to organize things structurally and by idea.

Basically a combination of the previous tags view with the new folders.

I agree.. I often combine tags and this seems like a serious regression.

I'm surprised and displeased to see that I'll be forced to move over in just two days? Not sure if I missed an announcement but this is the first time I've seen the migration message.

Can we at least export a list of our existing threads/tags so I can reorganize them later? Seems like they will just be dumped into a random folder if they have 2+ tags (and most of them do).

This was handled in an odd way. The tags are user data we created that is now deleted (other than the one chosen to pick a folder). Feels bad. Yes we were warned in the dialog...but still feels bad.

I thought tags were considered a more modern way of doing things vs. folders.

It seems like there must have been another option where the tags are stored somewhere at least; and not just deleted. Is there no "metadata" storage location for each assistant thread?

I agree with this. The folders have strictly less functionality than the tags and are a real downgrade with no apparent reasoning.

Ok honestly this is the first time I have to say "What were they thinking?" Was anyone dissatisfied with the tag system?. I'm not looking forward to going through all my threads and trying to guess what all their tags were, and trying to reorganize them in a way that'll never be as flexible as before.

This is a pretty big usability feature for me. I don't mind folders but significantly prefer tags.

I'm wondering what prompted this change anyways and if in the future other similar changes were to be made, do they intend to get enduser feedback first before committing to release...

I like folders, but I would prefer if they were separate from tags.
The current solution is just a bit disappointing.

Same boat, information is lost plus until now I have no idea which tag among several was chosen as the folder name. This is beyond me and I am pretty disappointed.

Feeling like I should've congratulated the team on the original tag interface before, but better late than never: I thought it was delightful, such a natural fit, and the ability to make a thread "permanent" by simply X-ing the "Temporary" tag was brilliant. The tag bar UI was so well-designed that I immediately knew how to use it; subtle enough that it faded into the background when I didn't.

There must be some folder fans out there for this change to have been implemented, but personally, I probably wouldn't've fallen in love with the Assistant feature the way I did if it'd been launched with folders instead. Having to create folders first, then drag threads into them instead of creating or adding tags on the fly as fast as you can type seems like a real step backwards, not to mention limiting you to only one "topic" per thread.

I guess the two camps (flat hierarchy+tags vs. hierarchical foilders) will probably never agree. But if folders are here to stay, I'd recommend allowing search results to match the folder name, or add a special search term like in:foldername. It doesn't look like you can currently do that.

As said in a few other threads, I strongly prefer the tags, or at least having the option to use tags (as another poster said, kinda like old.reddit.com option). I got really tired of the folders vs tags debates in the PKM community, but in this case, it's simply the case that I've organised my stuff quite robustly with tags and have multiple chats with multiple tags to help find what I am looking for, so the migration completely destroys my organisation.

As with others, I am a huge kagi supporter and reccomend it frequently to others, have been a member since 2023 and paying for ultimate as long as it has been available, but I find this rollout of a change to my organisation quite frustrating.

in the past the devs have been very kind and responsive to my queries, so i just want to echo others feelings on the new assistant migration and advocate for an option to keep the "old" view , or at minimum, keep our current tag organisation and not loose years of organisation.

Agreed. Tags was a great way of helping me find a convo that may apply to multiple situations. I need to make a VBA script for work. Tag it #VBA, #Excel, #Work, #StructuresQ... Easy to find a year later when I am revisiting the script.

Tags were one of the reasons why I use assistant. Really not a fan of the planned removal - please leave tags in there.

Just saw the option to switch to the new Assistant when I opened it just now. I read through the listed changes and honestly have to say that I’m shocked by the removal! I will be upset if I find that Kagi has effectively wiped some of my data when the change happens. I’m definitely not switching over early, and am hopeful that this will be walked back before the switchover date.

I’d like to second what an earlier poster wrote about how lovely and natural the “temporary as tag” implementation feels.

As a concrete suggestion, why not offer users the choice between tags or folders? Different people prefer different ways of organizing their data. Fastmail lets you do this, for instance: I like their approach, and would recommend it as an example to follow.

Very much not a fan of the folders. I tend to tag multiple tags for clarity as a lot of my topics span multiple things. For example, it could be a scripting problem but also related to HomeAssistant. I would tag it as both so I can find the scripting functionality but also able to find it if I looked for HomeAssistant.

I also had a lot of my things sorted and the removal of multiple tags has severely messed up the order and it is now very difficult to find things.

I'd be fine with options but just removing it was a shock for me. Never had an warning in the UI.

While we're on the topic - personally when I tag something I no longer want it to be temporary. In other words, everything I tag should be preserved. I find it (only very slightly) annoying to have to uncheck temporary and then add tags via a separate click/menu.

Love Kagi and the assistant - don't use any other ai solutions as a result
