Remove the cheapest subscription tier, as it's deceptive

Remove the cheapest subscription tier. It just makes new customers to think it is price of the search engine, but disappoints when it turns out it gets them next to nothing. It's really negative user experience that a search engine you pay for stops working right after you bought it. 300 searches is nowhere near enough for common monthly use. Never I have wanted to pay less to a company as I feel cheated: the 5e/m was just a decoy. Please, be upright honest and price it 10e/month if it cost you that much.

Another reason to remove the cheapest tier: Your upgrading is broken for me. I have tried to upgrade the plan for two weeks, but can't due to some error in billing processing. So for two weeks my kagi search has been in state "Oh you sure love kagi", that is, being painfully annoying. Enough is enough. Switching back to duckduckgo, which is not only free, but actually works more often than few days in a month. And it is more open source too.

Sorry to hear about that experience. The plan's purpose is exactly as it says: a Starter plan, to have you try Kagi and its paid features at a lower point of commitment, and eventually upgrade if you find the value is worth it. Our Trial is a non-renewing 100 searches, Starter effectively lets you extend this indefinintely.

We have about 15k users who happily stick with the Starter plan as it is all they need; they don't search that often, but like having Kagi available, or perhaps subscribe for other reasons - like to gain access to Assistant or other features like Best mode in Translate.

If you decide to stick with us or try us again at a later point, please reach out to support@kagi.com with your account email listed and we can help you resolve the billing issue. Billing issues can be complicated and we're often up against the limitations of Stripe to provide a "perfect" UX for billing when it comes to payment handling.

In fairness to Kagi, it is worthwhile to highlight the fact that the description of the Starter Plan is not "deceptive." Kagi unambiguously states that the plan includes "300 searches" and is intended to provide "enough searches to get you going." Whether the Starter Plan is appropriate for the needs of a user is a judgment that the individual subscriber has the responsibility to assess.
